Wild jubilation at Busunu as Suspected COVID-19 patient tests negative

There is currently a moment of warm fuzzies at Busunu in the West Gonja Municipal Assembly after test results for Coronavirus involving a Busunu based 'Kayayei' returnee proved negative.

The welcoming test results from PAD FM sources at the Municipal Health Directorate relieved many people from the initial panic/anxiety neurosis.

An enthusiastic crowd of family and friends converged at the West Gonja Hospital where the patient was being quarantined to accompany her home.

The 18-year old woman recently returned from Kayayei business in Kumasi to Busunu,in the Savannah Region and had been put on isolation as a precaution after she exhibited  "cough-like symptoms.

Her throat and nose swabs sample was taken to the Akomfo Anokye Teaching hospital in Kumasi for the necessary examination and the results turned out to be negative.

Speculations were rife that Busunu had recorded a case of the deadly COVID-19,with the suspect being a head porter who recently returned from Kumasi.

The necessary contacts were made by health personnel at the West Gonja Catholic Hospital and the suspect voluntarily offered to be quarantined at the facility for the necessary action.

The hospital has mounted a screening post at the entrance of the facility to test passengers on board public transport entering Damongo.

Hot on the heels of the novel COVID-19 pandemic,President Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo announced a partial lockdown(shelter-in-place order) of Accra and Kumasi, the epicentres of the Coronavirus in Ghana effective today Monday,March 30,2020.

The declaration brought about a sudden spike in the number head porters(Kayayei) travelling from Accra and Kumasi to Northern Ghana following the lockdown declaration shouldn't be lost on you.

Ghana's case count as at March 30,2020,stands at 152 with five deaths and two reported recovery cases.
Globally,we've a total of 723,540 case counts with 33,998 deaths and 151,824 recovery cases.

Aside Accra and Kumasi the cynosure of the virus, the Upper West Region recently confirmed its first case of COVID-19,involving a 42-year old Ghanaian who visited UK and Spain and returned to Ghana through Egypt.

On 29th March,2020,at 10:30 hrs,Tamale in the Northern Region, recorded 10 cases involving Guinean residents who travelled through Burkina Faso and Togo to Ghana and were picked up and mandatorily quarantined in Tamale under the direction of the Regional Security Council.

It is recommended that we wash our hands with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds, especially after visiting the John, coughing, s It's neezing or blowing one's nose. The virus is killed by soap outside the human body as soap burst its protective bubble.

Also, the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol by volume where soap and running water are not available in a ready manner.
Worthy of acceptance is the suggestion by the WHO that we should avoid touching our eyes, mouth or nose with unwashed hands.Science would say it's impossible to stay a minute without touching your face, but we ought to give it a hard try.

As much as possible, stay at home and be safe.

Risk of spread of COVID-19 in the wake of lockdown: our life in our hands

Risk of spread of COVID-19 in the wake of lockdown: our life in our hands

Hot on the heels of the novel COVID-19 pandemic,President Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo announced a partial lockdown(shelter-in-place order) of Accra and Kumasi, the epicentres of the Coronavirus in Ghana effective today Monday,March 30,2020.

The declaration came on the heels of heightened calls from the general public and particularly, the Ghana Medical Association.

Uganda,South Africa,Mauritius, Lesotho, Rwanda, Namibia among other African countries are on a lockdown.
Angola declared a state of emergency and a 3-day lockdown. In Zimbabwe, the lockdown is supposed to take effect from today and public transport is to be restricted, except public service buses that will operate under strict social distancing.

On 29th March,2020,at 10:30 hrs,Tamale in the Northern Region, recorded 10 cases involving Guinean residents who travelled through Burkina Faso and Togo to Ghana and were picked up and mandatorily quarantined in Tamale under the direction of the Regional Security Council.Spine-chilling,I guess!
Wondering how they got into the country in the first place, right? Through our passable borders, off course!

Inasmuch as I commend the president for the bold decision to lockdown(shelter-in-place order),the "windows of my eyes can't just close to the manner in which it is being done and announced, and the reverberations therefrom.

In fact,I was among the many still voices calling for a lockdown of the country, but ever since the president announced his kind of lockdown,I became more afraid of my own shadow.Simply put: panic buying and panic traveling!

Could it have been a total lockdown of Accra and Kumasi explicitly explained to the Ghanaian, with no movement of passengers across regions from the day of the declaration?

The risk of the lockdown alone,I put it to you blankly,is more than all the interventions of government put together.

People clamorously disregarding the Social distancing rule to stock-up toiletries and foodstuffs among other essential supplies for the next two weeks.Partial lockdown with many exemptions miscommunication to the extent that most people thought gas filing stations and banks were to be affected by the 'so-called lockdown.

With the stampede, you can imagine the number of people that would be affected if there were potential carries of the virus among them.

Leadership of our dear nation seem not to be inspiring confidence in the system. The hysteria of the virus seem to have clouded their sense of right reasoning. We understand it's not easy; but the mistakes are way too basic to fantasize.

Just as we became negligent and like a mirage, imported the strange virus into the country through our porous borders, ports and airfields,we are now trying out of the same slackness to endanger lives in our vulnerable communities across the various regions.Jumping Judas!

We had power under the imposition of restriction bill to restrain entry into Ghana in the early days, but leadership failed to do the needful.

Courage was mustered to abondone our students in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province,China, where the virus emanated, but we opened our borders and airfields wide enough to any traveler without due diligence.

I should like to say that, the sudden spike in the number of travellers from Accra and Kumasi to Northern Ghana following the lockdown declaration shouldn't be lost on you. This was smelled. It was anticipated and not at all flabbergasting.

Where were you expecting the head porters, popularly known as 'Kayayei',who in trying to put body and soul together have found convenience on the streets of Kumasi and Accra to go to? How about the many homeless street hawkers;were we expecting them to look to heaven and jump into the welkins?

These people survive under the mercy of the streets in the cities because,we've failed to create a better space for them to make a better living in rural areas. And in announcing the lockdown,we overlooked their needs and presence in the affected areas.

Going by the logic that when people move, the disease move, then there is a potential risk of spreading the virus to other parts of the country through this panic travel.

Mind you,it's free entry, free exit into Northern Ghana for most of these travelers without visible screening. Our leaders at the local level seem more in a deep slumber. The Savannah Region is a clear example.

They look on helpless as these people flood our communities with all its repercussions, when they could have simply deploy their powers and mounted roadblocks at ventage points, quarantine such people for 14 days before clearing them to join their families.

With our weak health system coupled with clear lack of ventilators and Personal Protection Equipment,i wonder were we will turn to if we get overwhelming cases of COVID-19.Our infant regions are already lamenting over the lack of Personnel Protection Equipment. They can't even take a sample of suspected patients, not to talk of running a test.

Be warned that there is community-level transmission of the virus ongoing in Ghana and you can't tell who is the next victim.

Indeed,we love and welcome our brothers and sisters home from their "life-searching" adventure, but not at the expense of our own lives. We can only love you as ourselves, but not more than ourselves. It is our prayer and hope that you are virus-free.

It goes without saying that,in times like this, self-protection is key!
Our lives remain in our hands, not government. We owe it a duty to ourselves and our communities to curb the spread of the virus in our regions.
'Self-isolate from relatives who recently returned from the epicentres of the virus for 14-days. You can organise a cocktail party with minimal attendance after the 14 days and thank me later.

Instead of the once-in-a-century fumigation of markets, let's disinfect our homes, lavatory and bathrooms on a daily basis as required.

It's recommended that we wash our hands with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds, especially after visiting the John, coughing, sneezing or blowing one's nose.

Shalom!

Coronavirus help us rediscover creatureliness & brokenness of human person - Catholic Bishop

Coronavirus help us rediscover creatureliness &  brokenness of human person - Catholic Bishop

The Bishop of the Diocese of Damongo in the newly created Savannah Region,Most Rev.Peter Paul Angkyier, says the good thing about the novel Coronavirus Pandemic is that it helps us to rediscover who we really are as human beings on a broken and helpless world.

Whilst on a working visit to the West Gonja Catholic hospital designated as the treatment centre in the region,he noted that, albeit discomforting,COVID-19 abet us realise there is a superior being whose knowledge surpasses all the technology and wealth of the world.

He said in ending the pandemic,we ought to know that it's God who brings about healing, but prayer alone is not enough without adequate human preparedness.

According to him, people who use to hang onto certain things were now beginning to discover that there is a true God.

"From my personal experience or perspective,I think this pandemic is very uncomfortable. On the other hand,it helps us to realise something which sometimes we try to push away-the creatureliness of the human person. The brokenness of the human person. The helplessness of the human person without the one who has made the human person. We,human beings are created to be one.We allow things to divide us,but this pandemic is helping us to begin to see that we belong together,"he disclosed.

He bemoaned the lack of logistics at the recently commissioned Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the designated treatment centre for COVID-19.

Even though, government has indicated its readiness to support, the facility in his view was not adequately prepared in terms of logistics to contain the spread of the pandemic.

Whilst calling on government and the necessary stakeholders to act,he reiterated the need not to wait and be overtaken by events before we begin to act.

The Medical Superintendent and his working staff were commended for the dedicated service in the midst of little resources.

He applauded a weekly political program,"Within the issues," hosted by Ananpansah B Abraham on PAD FM for helping to dispel rumours about the Coronavirus and redirecting the conversion to the preparedness of the region in containing the spread of the virus,in terms of logistics.

The Medical Superintendent,Dr. Vitalis A. Saadare,in an exclusive interview with PAD FM's Ananpansah,B. Abraham lamented over the lack of Personal Protection Equipment.

He said, albeit a regional treatment centre, they were not capable of taking samples, not to talk of managing cases should the worst happen due to the lack of basic protection materials.

The hope of receiving government consignment in his view was long overdue, underscoring the need to protect health personnel in their line of duty, since if they die in the process of taking care of patients there would be no one to take care of ensuing cases.

According to him, subsequent to the case involving the Damongo based Italian returnee which proved negative, the hospital has not received any support to acquire these equipment and would not be able to take a sample if a suspected case is recorded.

This is despite the fact that the facility spent not less than thousand Ghana cedis in transporting the samples to Kumasi for the necessary examination.

He said the hospital has put together a preparedness plan and would need a total amount of Ghc217,800.00 to fund the plan and another Ghc878,965.00 for all Diocesan Health Services in Damongo.

He appealed to government and other well-meaning bodies to come to the aid of the hospital.

Present also were the normalisation committee members of the hospital led by Fr.Lazarus Annyereh.

Ghana's case count now stands at 137 with four deaths and two reported recovery cases.

The Upper West Region in Northern Ghana has confirmed its first case of COVID-19,involving a 42-year old Ghanaian who visited UK and Spain and returned to Ghana through Egypt.

COVID-19:West Gonja Hospital laments over lack of Personal Protection Equipment

COVID-19:West Gonja Hospital laments over lack of Personal Protection Equipment

The West Gonja Catholic Hospital designated as a treatment centre for the novel Coronavirus in the Savannah Region is without Personal Protection Equipment.

This was made known by the Medical Superintendent,Dr. Vitalis A. Saadare,in an exclusive interview with PAD FM's Ananpansah,B. Abraham.

"...But as far as the Personal Protection Equipment are concerned which comprises the suit and all its accoutrements,we do not have a single one. As we speak,we do not have the suit here in this hospital,so if we happen to get any suspected case we would not even be able to take a sample.Taking us back to the recent events,we suspected a case last week.We brought the gentle man to the ward and had to take a sample. And you cannot take the sample when you're not properly protected. So we had to wait for 24 hours to make a request for just one(of the protective cloth) from Tamale,"he stated.

He appealed to government and other well-meaning bodies to come to the aid of the hospital.

The Bishop of the Diocese and Chief Executive Officer for the hospital,Most Rev.Peter Paul Angkyier, who was on a one-day visit to the facility commended management and staff for the good work they were doing in the midst of little.

He bemoaned the lack of logistics and equipment at the recently commissioned Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the COVID-19 treatment centre.

Mr Seidu Abu Jaja,on his part commended the NPP parliamentary candidate for his consistency responding to the needs of residents of Damongo.

He disclosed that, his greatest worry was how the people of Damongo and its surrounding communities would have adhered to the practice of the safety measures outlined by WHO,due to the  unavailability of Personnel Protective Equipment, but with the intervention of the NPP parliamentary candidate his worries are over.

The Damongo Constituency Director of Communication for the NPP, Mr Iddrisu Lamin, recounted how Lawyer Abu Jinapore earlier this week supported the West Gonja Catholic Hospital, the Municipal Health Directorate and all health centres and CHPS compounds in the Municipality with cartons of carbolic soaps to safeguard workers and patients in those facilities against COVID-19.

He further stated that, through the benevolence of Lawyer Abu Jinapore, they will collaborate with the necessary offices responsible for  educating the public for intensive public education on the need to observe World Health Organisation's protocols on Covid-19.

He again called on all to keep to the president's directives and to as well observe the national day of fasting and prayer.

Parts of Attributo inundated by flood after downpour

Parts of Attributo inundated by flood after downpour

Ravaging floods and debris have inundated Attributo,a community in Damongo in the Savannah Regional capital after a downpour.

The situation has left many residents helpless as heaps of debris of mainly plastic materials among others from choked drains have forced its way into their homes.

At the time of visit, the whole area was in chaotic situation with  residents struggling to scoop water and debris from their rooms.

The debris it's believed,is being washed down from a big gutter in between Mahama Kelly's residence and wisdom garden with a route around the Attribute CHPs compound.

Originally, there was supposed to be a culbet to direct the flow of water through the confluent valley along the Attributo CHPs to a deep culbet at the GN Bank and then end at the Sofo Dam at Yagbon Residential Area.

Even though, there are no major casualties recorded, residents have expressed fear that, the situation if not checked, could worsen and wreck unforseen havoc as we gradually enter into the raining season.

They have called on city authorities to come to their aid.

This happen to be the first major rain recorded in Damongo.

Coronavirus: We're yet to receive personal protection equipment-Immigration officers cry out

Coronavirus: We're yet to receive personal protection equipment-Immigration officers cry out

Immigration officers at the Chache Border in the Bole District of the newly created Savannah Region are living in fear in the wake of the outbreak of the deadly Coronavirus in Ghana due to the lack of Personal Protection Equipment (PPEs).

Among other things, the officers bemoaned the lack of PPEs coupled with the unavailability of a port health stationed at the border to help screen visitors, adding that, 'they are living in dangerous times.

They made this known when the Savannah Regional Minster, hon.Salifu Adam Braimah, paid a working visit to the area to ascertain for himself measures being put in place at the border to prevent the spread of the virus.

It can be reported that,at the time of the visit, only a hand sanitizer and some already used nose masks were available at the border for staff and visitors.

Chache Border in Bole is one of the  points of entry into Ghana from neighboring Ivory-Coast with the other one being Saru Border in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District, all in the Savannah Region.

The District Health Director,Mr.David Bakari disclosed that, the lack of funds to train staff and deploy logistics explains why they have not been able to station health workers at the border to screen visitors.

According to him, even though the president of the Republic announced measures to be implemented at every level to curtail the spread of the deadly virus, the district was yet to be equipped with the necessary resources and health consumables.

He further stated that, his outfit has submitted a budget to the district assembly for the release of funds to carry out their planned activities in-line with the president's pronouncement.

The Regional Minister presented two infrared thermometers to the border officers to enhance the screening of visitors, whilst assuring that, the Soru and Chache borders will be well equipped in the shortest possible time to handle potential outbreak of the virus.

He later inspected a proposed site for the construction of a holding room and an accommodation facility for health workers and assured the district of his full support in this trying times.

The minister earlier on paid a similar visit to the Mole National Park, which is one of the most patronised tourist sites in Ghana by foreigners to ascertain the extent of their preparedness to combat the COVID-19.

Ever since the outbreak of the virus, many residents have called on authorities to close down the park temporally, since it's a potential source of spread of the virus.

So far,Ghana has recorded seven (7) confirmed cases of the deadly Coronavirus.

President Akufo-Addo as part of measures to curtail the spread of the virus, announced a ban on public gathering such as religious service, funerals;closure of schools;travel restrictions for people coming from countries that had recorded 200 or more confirmed cases of COVID-19; designated isolation and treatment centres at some health facilities, screening of travellers with thermal scanners at the country’s points of entry, among others.

Coronavirus: Savannah Region needs logistics, test and isolation centre-NDC to Gov't

Coronavirus: Savannah Region needs logistics, test and isolation centre-NDC to Gov't

The National Democratic Congress in the Savannah Region has called on government to as a matter of urgency equip the existing health facilities in the region and provide a test and isolation centre to help deal with possible outbreak of the deadly Coronavirus.

In a statement,Malik Basintale, the Regional Communication Director noted with disappointed, the lack of test and isolation centre in the region.

He said Northern Ghana with its porous borders was at high risk of the virus and should not be neglected when it comes to government intervention.

According to him,the Savannah Region continuo to receive most foreign visitors despite the outbreak of the virus, due to the vast tourist sites such as the Mole National Park,Larabanga Mosque and Mystery stones;all at Damongo and the Slave Market at Salaga, but there is no clear roadmap for quarantining and testing suspected cases.

Read the full statement below:

Immediate Release
NDC- Savannah region
18th March, 2020.

*OUR TOURIST SITES PLACE US MORE THREATENED TO COVID-19 - WE DEMAND A TEST AND ISOLATION CENTER IMMEDIATELY.*

The National Democratic Congress - Savannah region expresses it's disappointment in the slow pace at which the government under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo has handled the provision of test and isolation centers at regional levels meant to manage the wide spread of the corona virus since the crisis touched base in Ghana.

Upon declaration of the deadly pandemic in Ghana and the establishment of test and isolation centers, we find the northern territories of the country completely neglected even as we stand more vulnerable due to our very porous borders, tourist sites and the constant international visits to them.

The Savannah region being home to some of the most visited tourist sites by foreigners such as, the Mole park, the Larabanga Mosque, the mystery stone, the salaga slave market among others, have recorded international visitors since the past weeks even when the Corona Virus was declared a pandemic and period of manifestation taking up to fourteen (14 days).

This situation leaves us in panic, despair and absolute despondency as we still do not have a clear roadmap towards testing and quarantining any suspected case should any show up in our region.

Upon an attempt to respond to the directive by our flag bearer H.E John Mahama, requesting all former appointees and party faithfuls to step in and help the government, we realized that no public education on sensitizing settlements even close to these tourist sites have been done,  hospitals, clinics and CHP compounds have still not received the necessary logistics from the government towards protecting the lives of indigenes.

Our border guards, tour guards, health workers, indigenes are desperate in guaranteeing their safety at the clear glimpse of the incurable pandemic as we are being abandoned by the government despite the huge sums made as revenue from these tourist sites over the period.

We solidify the passionate stance of H.E John Dramani Mahama by calling on President Akufo-Addo to as a matter of urgency provide the already built health facilities in the Savannah region with logistics, a test and isolation center to help manage the spread of the virus as we stand exposed to threats.

I'll personally deal with you when we leave office in 2021-MCE to NDC Communication Officer

I'll personally deal with you when we leave office in 2021-MCE to NDC Communication Officer

By:Ananpansah B Abraham

The Municipal Chief Executive for the West Gonja Municipal Assembly, hon. Saeed Muhazu Jibreal, has indicated that,he will personally deal with the NDC Communications Officer for the Damongo Constituency when they exit office in 2021.

In what appears to be comedy of errors, the Communications Officer,Mr.Mumuni Yahaya incurred the wrath of the president's representative when he described the latters conduct at the just ended 63rd Independence Day Celebration as undiplomatic and graceless.

'I am repeating this, when we leave office in 2021 and they see me in that park, they should beat me up.I am repeating this,I will deal with Kiyoyo(Communications Officer) personally at the GES level, not politics... I don't blame him.He is a stooge.A stupid person leading our school children...Stupid fool.Thank you,"the enraged MCE said.

The MCE it is reported, instructed the Disk Jockey to off and seize the microphone from the incumbent MP,hon. Adam Mutawakilu, whilst the legislator was presenting awards he instituted to deserving 2018/2019 BECE candidates at the Regional Parade held in Damongo, the Savannah Regional Capital.

The MCE in justifying his action, said the MP was not qualified and had no locus per protocol to speak at the ceremony.

The controversy which nearly sparked unrest brought the celebration to an abrupt end with disappointed students going home for the first time, since time immemorial without knowing which school emerged first, second and third in the march past.

In his usual paid for Sunday program aired between 8:00pm and 10:00pm on Damongo based PAD FM however, the NDC spokesman simply described the action of the MCE as undiplomatic and shameful, adding that,he should be mindful he will soon leave office.
He observed that the protocol of the program was long broken, since there was no opening prayer nor closing prayer, even though, well respected men of God were invited.

The incensed MCE called onto the radio station minutes after the Communications Officer had finished with his program and described the latter as a stooge,a stupid fool and an unintelligent person who goes about wearing old ladies shoes among other unprintable words.
He hinted he was going to deal personally with him from his professional lenses when he leaves office.

"I want to let Kiyoyo (Communication Officer) know that I'm far intelligent than him...I can sit him down and teach him because,I'm senior over him in the teaching field. How can I be an MCE and think that I will be there forever? I'm not stupid as he is! I want to tell him,I will not use politics to victimise him,but he should get ready for me.I will leave office.Just like he said I will leave office;I will surely leave office and become a teacher.I will become his senior officer and that is where I will teach him a lesson that it doesn't pay to insult senior people,"the MCE fumed.

The MCE went further to state that;

"I am going to go into the gutters with that stupid boy who doesn't know the difference between ladies shoes and men shoes. He wears ladies shoes...I am going to go into the gutters with this guy and I will deal with him personally.Kiyoyo doesn't know the one he is dealing with.I'm more arrogant than anyone else in this world...When we were in opposition, they can enquire from my people whether I've ever stepped foot in their Independence Day Celebration, because I won't go and listen to stupid people who cannot even read. They can't read...".

The Member of Parliament earlier on stated that,he duly sought for permission from the Regional Minister to do his presentation after he noticed that aspect was not captured on the program.
He indicated he has been presenting this award to deserving students for the past three years and that the MCE,should've consulted the Regional Minister before his action.

The Regional Minister, hon.Adam Salifu Braimah in an interview on PAD FM's Political Program,Aboyagbon admonished all parties to exercise restrain, since as a growing and learning region;some of those things are expected. He said as a colleague legislator, he couldn't have denied the Damongo MP an opportunity to do his presentations.
